Fear and faith are indivisible on the Republic of Earth, where privacy is nonexistent, creativity is a crime, and intelligence is a heresy.
Leander Schaiden has spent his young life in a losing battle against the State and the Church, seeking any freedom he can steal.
He dreams of an impossible escape.
The Septarch is immortal and all-powerful, far beyond the control of the Republic. Some say he is an alien, some say he was once human, some say he is the Devil himself.
Leander considers him a tale told to frighten children.
Leander is wrong.

The most unusual, exquisite, and strangely not horrifying (when it really should be) love story. After multiple readings still stuns me how much I care about, back and want to know more about the 2 main characters - when you read the book and the actions of the characters you will understand what a feat the author has managed to get that response. Also read Schadenfreude (equally haunting, just as 'utterly horrific yet somehow not horrifying' and yet moving and beautiful too) and this author is something special. You won't soon forget his books - they are like nothing else you've read and yet intensely real too. I very much hope there will be a sequel to Hero's Torch soon - these characters are powerful and unique, and there's much more I want to hear.Product details

Hero Torch Lux et Umbra Book 1 edition by 19 Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Certainly not for everyone, particularly not those looking for your run of the mill dystopian novel. This story is political commentary and love story couched in a comment on normative desire, and is not for the squeamish or the prude. I originally read this book when it was just posts on Gurochan's lit board, and I have been entranced by every piece of this author's work that I have come across since. Owning a physical copy of this book brings me much joy. I look forward to the release of the second volume. 19 is a treasure. Stay perfect.
Beautifully written and gripping, and just terribly twisted enough to keep you reading. I devoured this novel so quickly and it was well worth it
I liked the characters from the start and as the story got darker and more profound I found myself wrapped up in their emotions completely. Would recommend this book to anyone who's not... Squeamish
I'd like to say I'm not the typical audience for this book, but this book is in a genre by itself (or at least the author is). Sometimes shock is poorly wielded. But this author uses shocking images to get the reader questioning and as a way to understand the characters' views of themselves and the world around them. The main character is an outsider in a future dystopia who finds himself (in the "who he is" way) in a greater dystopia. I got a manuscript years ago and was quick to buy a published copy. It's a love story and one that has always stuck with me.
This book will not be for everyone but it was for me!! The complexity of the characters and the world building was breath taking... I just loved Leander... And Oberstorn as well... Neither are nice our loveable characters but it was a method to their madness which had me hooked... Around 86% of the book I got pissed!! I just didn't understand the turn of events.. But it came together so brilliantly.. I will definitely be reading more from this author!!!
